Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has won the Walter Camp Award, given to the college football player of the year.

Mayfield beat out Saquon Barkley, running back from Penn State; Lamar Jackson, Louisville quarterback; Bryce Love, running back from Stanford; and Rashaad Penny, running back from San Diego State.

He also nabbed the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best quarterback and later added the Maxwell Award, another player of the year honor presented by the Maxwell Memorial Football Club of Philadelphia.

Mayfield completed 71% of his passes for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the Sooners to a 12-1 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Eight of the past 10 winners were quarterbacks.

In other awards announced Thursday in Atlanta:

Jim Thorpe: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama. For the nation’s best defensive back, presented by the College Football Writers Association of America.

Lou Groza: Matt Gay, Utah. For the best place-kicker, presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

Fred Biletnikoff: James Washington, Oklahoma State. For the outstanding collegiate receiver, presented by the College Football Writers Association of America.

Doak Walker: Bryce Love, Stanford. For the outstanding college running back, sponsored by the Southern Methodist Athletic Forum.

Butkus: Roquan Smith, Georgia. Presented to college football’s best linebacker.

Ray Guy: Michael Dickson, Texas. Presented to college football’s best punter.

Outland: Ed Oliver, Houston. For the outstanding collegiate interior lineman, presented by the College Football Writers Association of America.

Chuck Bednarik: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama. For the outstanding collegiate defensive player. 

Holder of the Year Award: Connor McGinnis, Oklahoma.

Sports Spirit Award: Iowa’s Stead children hospital, football fans and team

Coach of the Year Award: Scott Frost, UCF

NCFAA Contribution to College Football Award: Brent Musburger
